Pitch Black: which Pokémon cards will be the most expensive?

Pitch Black is out 17 July, but it is the same set already selling in Japan as Abyss Eye. From today's Japanese prices, our estimate of the 10 most expensive Pokémon cards, led by Mega Darkrai ex at €428.

Versione italiana: leggi qui.

The most valuable card in the new Pokémon set Abyss Eye is worth €428 today: the Gold Secret Rare version of Mega Darkrai ex, the set's mascot. And those same cards are about to land in Europe.

Abyss Eye launched in Japan on 22 May 2026. From 17 July it reaches the international market under the name Pitch Black: same set, same artwork, different language. If you collect outside Japan, this is the right moment to know which cards actually matter.

Pitch Black is not out yet, but it is the exact same set. So we can already get a sense of which cards will matter most by looking at today's Japanese prices. We ran all 121 cards through the DarkDex pricing engine and ranked them by value. This is not a final ranking: European launch prices will differ, but the pecking order between the cards is unlikely to change much.

In short. This is an estimate, based on Abyss Eye, Pitch Black's Japanese twin, already on sale. Leading today is Mega Darkrai ex at €428 on the Japanese market. Pitch Black launches on 17 July.

Just outside the top 10, Slowbro (Illustration Rare) sits essentially level with tenth place at around €14.

The top card is a Gold Secret Rare, the set's "gold" card. Below it, Special Illustration Rares dominate: six of the top ten. Three of them are Trainer cards (Misty's Spirit, Gwynn and Gladion's Showdown), the classic character cards that the market pays more for than common creatures.

What Abyss Eye is

Abyss Eye is the fourth Japanese set built around Mega Evolutions, with 81 cards in the base set. The headliner is Mega Darkrai ex, making its trading card debut: it is the set's signature card and, as you saw, also the most expensive.

The three versions of Mega Darkrai ex

Darkrai is the most interesting card to watch, because it exists in three collectible versions at very different prices:

  • Gold Secret Rare (no. 118): €428, the most sought-after in the set
  • Special Illustration Rare (no. 114): €313, the full-art variant
  • Illustration Rare (no. 099): €14.0, the most accessible

It is the same pattern we will most likely see again in Pitch Black: one signature card spread across several tiers of rarity and price.

What to expect at the European launch

When Pitch Black arrives on 17 July, the English-language version of these same cards will appear in Europe. Launch prices rarely match those of a settled Japanese market: early on, supply, hype and day-one demand all weigh in. Still, the ranking above is a solid compass for which cards to look for, and which ones deserve a second thought before you buy.

Heads up. Card prices move constantly: the figures in this article capture the market as of 15 July 2026.
