Mega Evolution: the most expensive Pokémon cards

Mega Evolution is the expansion that opened the series of the same name on 26 September 2025, closing out the Scarlet and Violet era. It introduced Mega Evolution Pokémon-ex cards, and almost a year later its prices are the most stable in the whole block: the market has had time to decide what actually holds value.

Unlike the other sets in the series, there is no single cover creature here but two: Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex share the top of the ranking, and the set shipped two distinct Elite Trainer Boxes, one for each.

We ran all 188 cards in the set through the DarkDex pricing engine and ranked them by value: real prices for singles in Near Mint condition, updated to 12 August 2026. Graded copies are excluded.

In short. Two gold cards lead: Mega Lucario ex Gold Secret Rare (#188) at €185.64 and Mega Gardevoir ex Gold Secret Rare (#187) at €151.11. Right behind them, Mega Venusaur ex (#177) at €113.53 and the two Special Illustration Rares of Lucario and Gardevoir, both at €110.64. Prices as of 12 August 2026.

The set with two mascots

Mega Evolution is the only expansion in the series where the top spot is shared. Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex together take four of the top five places, and their Special Illustration Rares are worth exactly the same, €110.64.

That is not a coincidence: the set was built around both, with two dedicated sealed products (Mega Lucario Elite Trainer Box at €67.64 and Mega Gardevoir at €62.14), and the market followed that symmetry. It is an unusual profile, since Pokémon expansions normally have a single signature card that absorbs all the attention.

The practical effect is that value spreads out better: the top three cards cover 45% of the set, the lowest share anywhere in the Mega Evolution series. For comparison, in Phantasmal Flames the top three make up 91%.

The Trainer cards that hold their value

Positions nine through twelve are four full-art Trainer cards: Lillie's Determination (€23.40), Acerola's Mischief (€17.27), Lt. Surge's Bargain (€14.18) and Wally's Compassion (€12.21).

That is a strong showing, explained by the fact that these cards appeal to collectors and tournament players at once. Thirteenth place goes to a Bulbasaur Illustration Rare at €10.15, the classic case of a common card held up by its artwork and by affection for the Pokémon rather than by rarity.

The many versions of Mega Lucario ex

Mega Lucario ex exists in four prints inside the set:

• base print (#077): €0.11
• Full Art (#160): €7.02
• Special Illustration Rare (#179): €110.64
• Gold Secret Rare (#188): €185.64, the most expensive card in the set

That is a 1,688x difference between the priciest and the cheapest. Mega Gardevoir ex makes the same journey, from €0.11 to €151.11, a 1,374x gap, and Mega Venusaur ex reaches 1,032x.

Value is not in the creature, it is in the print: collector number, rarity and finish. Which is why a collection cannot be valued by eye, but needs the number of every single card. DarkDex keeps each variant's price separate for exactly that reason.

What it costs to complete Mega Evolution

Buying every card in the set at the lowest Near Mint price costs roughly €1,008. The structure is the usual one:

• the top three cards cost €450, which is 45% of the total
• the set's median card is €0.11
• 142 of 188 cards, 76% of the set, are under one euro

So for a little over €550 you get a complete set minus its top three cards. For comparison, a Mega Evolution Booster Box costs €179.64 and the Enhanced version €230.64: if the goal is finishing the set, singles remain more efficient, while sealed makes sense for the fun of opening or for keeping aside.

As always this is a theoretical floor: minimums from different sellers, shipping excluded, counting only cards with at least one listing. In practice you spend more, but the order of magnitude holds.

Where Mega Evolution sits in the series

We ran all six sets in the series through the pricing engine, so this comparison rests on numbers rather than impressions:

Mega Evolution has the best distributed value in the whole series: the top three cards make up 45% of the total, the lowest share in the block. At 188 cards it is also the second largest after Ascended Heroes, which explains why it costs €1,008 to complete despite a peak of "only" €185.

The comparison with Phantasmal Flames is instructive: the two sets cost almost the same to finish, €1,008 against €1,021, yet they are opposites. In Phantasmal Flames 91% of the spend is three cards; here it is 45%, and the rest is spread across 185 cards.

There is also something true only of this set: being the first released, it is the one the market has had the most time to price. Mega Evolution's values today are the most stable in the series, while the recent sets are still settling.

Singles or packs?

It depends what you are after. Packs are bought for the fun of opening them: a box's expected value is almost always below its price, and it makes sense only if the opening is part of the enjoyment. Singles are for when you want a specific card or the complete set, because you pay market price and know exactly what arrives.

Mega Evolution adds one more option: the set shipped two different Elite Trainer Boxes, one for Mega Lucario and one for Mega Gardevoir, at €67.64 and €62.14. They are the most sensible products for anyone who wants to open something without committing to the €179.64 full box, and they remain collectible in their own right.
