Phantasmal Flames: the most expensive Pokémon cards

Phantasmal Flames is the second expansion in the Mega Evolution series, released on 14 November 2025. Nine months on, prices have settled, and they describe the most lopsided set we have ever analysed.

Three cards, all three the same Mega Charizard X ex, are worth 91% of the entire set's value on their own. The first, the Special Illustration Rare (#125), sits at €620.64: it is the most expensive card in the whole Mega Evolution series. The third card in the ranking is worth €17.27, thirty-six times less than the first.

We ran all 130 cards in the set through the DarkDex pricing engine and ranked them by value: real prices for singles in Near Mint condition, updated to 12 August 2026. Graded copies are excluded.

In short. Phantasmal Flames is, in practice, a one-card set: Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare (#125) at €620.64 and its Gold Secret Rare (#130) at €295.63 are together worth almost €920, in a set worth €1,021 in total. From the third card down, nothing breaks €18. Prices as of 12 August 2026.

The ranking: the 10 most expensive cards

Ten rows, and they tell the whole story of the set: only the top eight cards are above €8, the ninth costs €3.62 and the tenth €1.09. In a ranking of the most expensive cards, reaching one euro by the tenth row is itself the headline, and from the eleventh down it stays below that figure all the way.

A set built around a single card

The gap between second and third place defines the expansion: you go from €295.63 to €17.27. A 94% collapse in a single row, and nothing like it exists in the other sets of the series.

The reason is that the Phantasmal Flames market is all Charizard. That is nothing new in Pokémon, but here it is taken to an extreme: the top three cards in the ranking are the same creature in three different prints, and together they make €933 out of a set worth €1,021.

Behind them the set is nearly flat. The Trainer card Dawn (#129) at €15, Mega Sharpedo ex (#127) at €13.71, Mega Lopunny ex (#128) at €11.21 and Rotom ex (#126) at €9.93 are all Special Illustration Rares, the set's most prized print type, and none of them reaches €16. In an expansion without Charizard they would be the headline cards.

The many versions of Mega Charizard X ex

Mega Charizard X ex exists in four prints inside Phantasmal Flames, and it is the most extreme case in the entire series:

• base print (#013): €0.18, eighteen cents
• Full Art (#109): €17.27
• Gold Secret Rare (#130): €295.63
• Special Illustration Rare (#125): €620.64

That is a 3,448x difference between first and last. Eighteen cents against six hundred and twenty euros: same Pokémon, same set, same print run.

It is the clearest possible demonstration that value is not in the name but in the print: collector number, rarity and finish. Someone who opens a pack and finds "a Mega Charizard X ex" does not yet know whether they are holding the price of a coffee or the price of a phone, and to find out they have to check the number at the bottom. What it costs to complete Phantasmal Flames

Buying every card in the set at the lowest Near Mint price costs roughly €1,021. This is where the numbers get almost comic:

• the top three cards cost €934, which is 91% of the total
• the set's median card is €0.11
• 117 of 130 cards, 90% of the set, are under one euro

Take the three Charizards out and all the rest of Phantasmal Flames costs under €90. A hundred and twenty-seven cards for the price of a dinner. It is probably the cheapest set in the series to "almost" complete, and at the same time one of the most expensive to actually finish.

For comparison, a Phantasmal Flames Booster Box costs €215.62 and an Elite Trainer Box €59.28. Opening a full box still leaves the odds of hitting the Special Illustration Rare very low, while €215 spent on singles buys 90% of the set with plenty left over.

As always this is a theoretical floor: minimums from different sellers, shipping excluded, counting only cards with at least one listing. In practice you spend more.

Where Phantasmal Flames sits in the series

We ran all six sets in the Mega Evolution series through the pricing engine, so this comparison rests on numbers rather than impressions:

Phantasmal Flames holds the most expensive card in the entire Mega Evolution series, the €620.64 Special Illustration Rare of Mega Charizard X ex. No other set in the block reaches that figure, and the outright runner-up, the Pikachu ex from Ascended Heroes, stops at €500.64.

But the comparison also shows the other side: Phantasmal Flames costs €1,021 to complete, almost identical to Mega Evolution at €1,008, except Mega Evolution has 58 more cards and a €185 peak. The entire difference sits in the Charizard.

The most useful comparison is with Ascended Heroes: a similar price bracket for the headline card, but Ascended Heroes costs two and a half times more to complete, because it has depth. Phantasmal Flames does not: it is very steep, then flat.

Singles or packs?

It depends what you are after, and on this set the answer is sharper than usual. Packs are bought for the fun of opening them, but here a box's expected value is propped up almost entirely by the chance of hitting a card you almost certainly will not hit. Singles are for when you want a specific card or the complete set.

On Phantasmal Flames the maths is close to embarrassing: €215.62 for a Booster Box against under €90 for all 127 cards in the set that are not the three Charizards. For the price of one box you can buy the rest of the set twice over and still have money left for shipping.
