What Mega Darkrai ex from Pitch Black is worth today

The Mega Darkrai ex #116 Special Illustration Rare is worth €176.27 as of 13 October, against €289.61 on 28 August. The Gold #120 went from €165.64 to €105.12, and the Ultra Rare #101 from €6.63 to €5.95. The versions of the card and how to tell them apart are on the page about the most expensive Pitch Black cards.

The two rarest versions of Darkrai explain almost everything on their own: of the €222 the master set lost, €174 comes from #116 and #120, almost four euros out of five. But unlike Phantasmal Flames, where the rest of the set held up, here the second-tier cards fell hard too: Mega Chandelure ex -24%, Gladion's Final Battle -30%, Misty's Vitality -30%.

What the Pitch Black master set is worth

Adding up the price of all 120 cards in the set, on 28 August the Pitch Black master set was worth €698.68. On 13 October it is worth €476.55: -32%, that is €222 less, a third of its value.

Out of 120 cards, 33 went down, 4 went up and the rest stayed flat, almost all commons and uncommons already at the floor. Completing Pitch Black today costs a third less than it would have at the end of August. The rarest cards in the set and what they cost are on the page about the Pitch Black chase cards.

Pitch Black is the set that fell the most

Among the 17 recent sets we track, Pitch Black is the one that lost the most on its top cards: about -35%. Right behind it are Phantasmal Flames, around -30%, and Chaos Rising, around -29%. Then there is a gap: the fourth set in the ranking loses less than half that, around -14%, and already settled sets like 151 and Prismatic Evolutions barely moved, between -1% and -4%.

The drop coincides with the release of the 30th Celebration set on 16 September. We cannot say it is the only cause, but the picture fits: when a long-awaited celebration set comes out, collectors' attention and money move there, and the sets released shortly before lose buyers exactly when the people who opened them try to sell their best cards. Older sets, which no longer had a "launch" price to lose, hardly moved.

Is it worth buying Pitch Black cards now?

It is the right question, because for buyers this drop is an opportunity. But nobody can say for sure that it is over.

If you want a card to keep, Mega Darkrai ex #116 at €176 costs €113 less than six weeks ago. Buying after a 39% drop does not guarantee you caught the bottom, but it means you did not pay for August's hype. The same goes for the Gold at €105 and for the second-tier Special Illustration Rares, almost all down by a fifth or more.

If you are buying to resell, the data calls for caution: the set lost a third of its value in six weeks and there is no sign of a reversal yet. It is worth watching the trend for a few weeks.

If you already own the cards, you have lost nothing until you sell. Your collection is worth less today than in August, but that is a market value, not a realised loss.
