At the end of August the Mega Charizard X ex Special Illustration Rare from Phantasmal Flames cost €620.63. On 13 October it costs €400.64: €220 gone in six weeks, more than a third of its value. And it is not an isolated case: every top card in the set went down, with no exceptions.
This is the first episode of Sets that are losing money, the series where we compare prices from before the 30th Celebration release with today's, set by set. Phantasmal Flames is the second biggest faller among the sets we track.
In short. Between 28 August and 13 October 2026 all 8 cards in Phantasmal Flames that were worth more than €5 went down, all 8 of them. Mega Charizard X ex #125 went from €620.63 to €400.64 (-35%), the Gold #130 from €285.64 to €230.64 (-19%), Dawn #129 from €15.00 to €9.14 (-39%). The master set, all 130 cards in the set, fell from €1,010.76 to €720.17: -29%. Almost the whole drop comes from a single card.
How much Phantasmal Flames cards have dropped
These are the ten most expensive Phantasmal Flames cards today, priced as of 13 October:
And this is the comparison with 28 August for the eight cards that were above €5 back then:
| Card | 28 August | 13 October | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Charizard X ex (125) | €620.63 | €400.64 | -35% |
| Mega Charizard X ex Gold (130) | €285.64 | €230.64 | -19% |
| Mega Charizard X ex (109) | €16.24 | €14.51 | -11% |
| Dawn (129) | €15.00 | €9.14 | -39% |
| Mega Sharpedo ex (127) | €13.71 | €13.21 | -4% |
| Mega Lopunny ex (128) | €12.10 | €7.92 | -35% |
| Rotom ex (126) | €9.05 | €9.00 | -1% |
| Meowth (106) | €8.65 | €8.14 | -6% |
Eight out of eight. Some drops are small, like Rotom ex and Mega Sharpedo ex, which lost a few cents, but not a single top card went up. Among the cards worth around one euro a few did move upwards, but those are moves of a few cents that make no difference to the value of the set.
What Mega Charizard X ex from Phantasmal Flames is worth today
The Mega Charizard X ex #125 Special Illustration Rare is worth €400.64 as of 13 October. At the end of August it was at €620.63. It is the card the whole of Phantasmal Flames is built around: on its own it is worth more than half the entire set, which is why its price decides what everything else is worth.
The Gold #130 held up better: from €285.64 to €230.64, a -19% that is about half the drop of the Special Illustration Rare. The Full Art #109 went from €16.24 to €14.51. Every version of the card, and how to tell them apart, is on the page about the most expensive Phantasmal Flames cards.
The number that matters is this one: of the €290 the master set lost, €220 comes from Charizard #125 alone, three quarters of the drop. The other cards moved, but it is one single card that dragged the set down.
What the Phantasmal Flames master set is worth
Adding up the price of all 130 cards in the set, on 28 August the Phantasmal Flames master set was worth €1,010.76. On 13 October it is worth €720.17: -29%, about €290 less.
Out of 130 cards, 26 went down, 6 went up and the rest stayed flat. The flat ones are almost all commons and uncommons, which are already at the floor and have no room to fall. The drop is therefore entirely at the top of the set: in the Special Illustration Rares and the Gold.
Completing Phantasmal Flames today costs almost a third less than it would have at the end of August. What it costs in detail, card by card, is on the page about the Phantasmal Flames chase cards.
Why Phantasmal Flames prices fell
The drop coincides with the release of the 30th Celebration set on 16 September. We cannot say it is the only cause, but the picture fits: when a long-awaited celebration set comes out, collectors' attention and money move there, and the sets released shortly before lose buyers exactly when the people who opened them are trying to sell their best cards.
Phantasmal Flames is not alone. Among the 17 recent sets we track, the three that fell the most are Pitch Black, Phantasmal Flames and Chaos Rising, with drops between 29% and 35% on their top cards. At the opposite end, older and already "settled" sets like 151 and Prismatic Evolutions barely moved, between -1% and -4%.
The second factor is concentration. A set where one card is worth more than half the total is fragile: when that card goes down, the whole set goes down with it. Phantasmal Flames is exactly that case.
Is it worth buying Phantasmal Flames cards now?
It depends on what you are after, and nobody can say for sure whether the drop is over.
If you want a card to keep, Charizard #125 at €400 costs a third less than at the end of August, and whoever bought it back then paid €220 more for the same card. Buying after a drop does not guarantee you caught the bottom, but it means you are not paying the price of the hype.
If you are buying to resell, the data says go easy: the set lost 29% in six weeks and nothing points to a reversal yet. The honest advice is to watch the trend for a few weeks before deciding.
If you already own the cards, you have lost nothing until you sell. Your collection is worth less today than in August, but that is a market value, not a realised loss.
