A month ago 30th Celebration came out in Italy with empty shelves and sky-high prices. A week later we covered the first crash. Today, with a month of prices collected day by day, the whole curve is visible: a slide lasting more than two weeks, a bottom on 7 October and a recovery that has been going on for ten days.

In short. The set's 15 most expensive cards were worth €1,441 together on 21 September. They fell to €1,067 on 7 October (-26%) and on 17 October they are worth €1,153: still 20% below 21 September, but 8% above the bottom. The hardest-hit new cards are Sylveon ex (-58%) and the two Mewtwo ex (-54% and -56%). From their lows, though, some are recovering strongly: Mew VMAX has more than doubled. The two chase cards, Charizard and Lugia, are above their first price.

The curve of the 15 most expensive cards

Each time we added up the DarkDex Price of the set's 15 most expensive cards as of 21 September, Italian-language singles, Near Mint condition. We start from 21 September because it is the first day all 15 had enough sales for a reliable price.

DateValue of the top 15 cardsVersus 21 September
21 September€1,441
24 September€1,393-3%
28 September€1,297-10%
1 October€1,256-13%
4 October€1,119-22%
7 October€1,067-26%, the bottom
10 October€1,084-25%
14 October€1,106-23%
17 October€1,153-20%

The slide was long and steady: €374 in sixteen days, as the cards opened in the first weeks reached the market. The hardest hit came in early October, -€137 in three days. Since 7 October the value has climbed back by €86, and every reading since then has been higher than the one before: the first time in a month the curve has gone up steadily.

The hardest-hit new cards

The cards printed for the 30th, the Special Illustration Rares and the Futuristic Rares, are the ones that lost the most:

Mewtwo ex (157, Futuristic Rare)€83.26€36.68-56%

Pikachu ex (149, Special Illustration Rare)€72.36€49.17-32%
Gengar ex (154, Special Illustration Rare)€101.30€71.76-29%

The clearest case is Sylveon ex: at the end of September it was one of the most wanted cards in the set, today it costs less than half. The most expensive cards in the set and how to recognise them are on the page about the most expensive 30th Celebration cards.

Some reprints fell too

Not every reprint in the Classic Collection held up. Some fell more than the new cards:

Reprint21 September17 OctoberChange
Arceus V ASTRO (Brilliant Stars)€22.22€7.50-66%
Genesect EX (Plasma Freeze)€20.13€8.03-60%
Raikou (Vivid Voltage)€23.81€10.12-57%
Darkrai & Cresselia LEGEND (Triumphant)€24.39€12.80-48%
Shining Celebi (Neo Destiny)€50.01€36.59-27%

These are reprints of less famous cards, whose launch price was inflated by novelty. Reprints of the historic cards, as you will see below, went very differently.

The cards recovering from the bottom

This is the news of the month. Each card hit its low on a different day, and some have climbed back visibly since:

CardLow17 OctoberFrom the low
Erika's Jigglypuff (reprint)€5.36 (4 October)€12.41+132%
Mew VMAX (reprint, Fusion Strike)€15.08 (28 September)€31.83+111%
Scizor ex (reprint)€7.14 (23 September)€13.02+82%
Greninja BREAK (reprint)€6.77 (5 October)€11.82+75%
Magikarp (reprint, Paldea Evolved)€67.00 (23 September)€81.49+22%
Sylveon ex (153)€28.47 (7 October)€33.70+18%

A rebound from the low does not mean the price will return to September levels: Sylveon ex, even after +18%, is still down by more than half. It does mean there were buyers at those prices, and that for these cards the worst may be over. Other cards are at their low right today: Jirachi ex (€35.64) and Pikachu ex 150 (€51.86).

Charizard and Lugia: the chase cards are above their first price

The two most expensive reprints in the set went against the tide:

CardFirst priceLow17 October
Charizard (reprint, Base Set)€203.08 (18 September)€196.78 (9 October)€249.51
Lugia (reprint, Aquapolis)€233.97 (19 September)€190.61 (21 September)€252.16

Charizard is 23% above its first price and Lugia 8%. They had low days too, but each time they bounced back quickly. While the rest of the set lost a fifth of its value, the two cards everyone is after are worth more today than a month ago. It is the pattern you see in almost every set: cards of iconic Pokémon hold their price, new cards lose it when the set stops being new. All the rarest cards are on the page about the 30th Celebration chase cards.

What now? The newsstand restock

Since 16 October 30th Celebration is back at Italian newsstands with a restock. More packs opened usually means more cards on the market: some cards may fall again in the coming weeks, especially the Special Illustration Rares. Nobody can say for sure, though, and so far Charizard and Lugia have not felt any wave of openings.

If you want a card to keep, many cost between half and two thirds of their September price today. If you are buying to resell, an 8% rebound after a 26% drop is still too little to call it a reversal. If you already own the cards, your collection is worth less than a month ago, but it is a market value, not a realised loss.
